Financial Modelling

Assessing Commercial Viability, Funding and Risk

We develop integrated financial models that translate project assumptions into transparent cash-flow projections, enabling a clear assessment of profitability, affordability and bankability.

StratEcon provides project financial analysis to assess the commercial viability, funding requirements and risk profile of infrastructure and development projects. Our analyses are designed to support informed decision-making by project sponsors, investors, lenders and public-sector institutions across the full project lifecycle.

We develop integrated financial models that translate project assumptions into transparent cash-flow projections, enabling a clear assessment of profitability, affordability and bankability. Our approach focuses on the key drivers of financial performance: capital expenditure, operating costs, revenue structures, financing terms, taxation and the timing of cash flows.

What We Do

Project Financial Modelling

StratEcon builds financial models for infrastructure and development projects, translating technical and economic assumptions into clear projections of project performance. Standard outputs include cash-flow projections and key financial performance indicators such as Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), payback periods and Debt Service Coverage Ratios (DSCRs). Where relevant, we assess alternative funding and financing structures, including public-private partnerships, blended finance and grant-supported arrangements. Our work is oriented towards investment decisions and funding applications, not financial reporting.

StratEcon places particular emphasis on risk and sensitivity analysis. We test project resilience under different demand, cost, price and financing scenarios, identifying the key financial risks and thresholds that may affect project viability. This enables clients to understand their downside exposure and to design appropriate mitigation strategies before investment commitments are made.

Our financial analysis is closely integrated with our economic feasibility and impact assessments, ensuring consistency between project-level financial outcomes and broader economic considerations. This integrated perspective is particularly valuable for public-sector and development-oriented projects, where financial sustainability and economic value must be assessed together. It is also essential for BFI and PPP applications, which require both an economic CBA and a supporting financial model prepared to National Treasury standards.

Why StratEcon

StratEcon’s project financial analyses are independent, transparent and decision-focused. Our models are built to be understood, not just accepted: assumptions are clearly documented, logic is traceable and outputs are defensible under the scrutiny of funders, regulators and stakeholders. Our independence means we do not shape conclusions to suit a preferred outcome. And our integration of financial and economic analysis means the full picture of commercial viability, economic efficiency and development impact is captured in a single, consistent framework.
